First ideas

Women and film - actresses and socila attitudes to gender. Do big box office stars tell us anything about cultural attitudes to femininity?

40s - Bette Davies etc - strong, adult, powerful witty; men's equals
50s - Marilyn Monroe - weak, infantilised, "ditzy", weird logic, blonde, bimbo.

Why this massive change. late 30s early 40s - US at war women had to work outside of home. After war (1945) male anxiety about female independence leads to femme fatates (evil) and helpless girly women like Monroe as the ideal.

Apply this to 2 or 3 corrent big box office stars.
